John Prine died on April 7th, 2020, the same day as that Spring’s Pink Moon. Each year I make it a point to see it as it arcs, and I didn’t know then and still don’t know what to make of this bruising coincidence. “Hello In There” is one of my favorite ever songs. His wisdom is casual, stretching many miles wide and measureless fathoms deep.
“I’d Bet My Land & Titles” is a driving, conversational dust devil of a new single from Elizabeth Nelson’s The Paranoid Style that references, inter alia, the poetry of Lou Reed, the visions of Pete Townsend, the permanence of property law, the evanescence of life and the infelix culpa whose thud was felt that April night when Mr. Prine passed on.
